The State Duma adopted in the first reading a bill on toughening penalties for organizing illegal migration

The State Duma approved in the first reading a bill on imprisonment for up to 15 years for organizing illegal migration by organized groups or committing serious and especially serious crimes on the territory of Russia.

The plan was initially submitted to the House of Representatives along with a package of other proposals related to improving immigration policy. The authors of the bill were State Assembly Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin, and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and Chair of the Duma Committee on Migration Policy Irina Yarovaya.

Volodin insisted that the full package of proposals would be considered as a priority by December 2024. According to him, these changes will help curb the organization of illegal migration in Russia, toughen penalties for committing crimes in the region, and also help ensure public safety.

Earlier, the State Duma adopted in the first reading a bill on confiscation of money, valuables and other property for organizing illegal migration. The authors of the bill stated that internal migration is primarily determined by economic and social factors. At the same time, the specifics of illegal immigration are associated with corruption.
