The State Duma took a cue from the West and decided to take up Telegram
Representative Alexander Khinshtein said that it is time for Russia to clean up the popular Telegram messenger, reports the news agency NEWSDATA.RU.
According to legislators, the authorities should tighten control over some Telegram channels. This concerns large anonymous channels. In his opinion, it is necessary to make registration with Roskomnadzor mandatory for bloggers with more than 10 thousand subscribers.
The deputy minister explained the need to introduce such rules by the fact that registration will help bring order to messengers and combat anonymous channels that spread fake news, engage in blackmail and other crimes.
He stressed that this measure is doubly necessary for the Russian Federation, since many of these channels are connected with Ukrainian special services, work against the Russian Federation and threaten Russian subscribers.
He also pointed out that the attacker, who is the administrator and owner of the channel, had access to subscribers' personal data, including their names, photos and phone numbers. This information could be used by scammers.
