Russia May Get Another Holiday Day Off

Moscow, October 14, FederalPress. The Orthodox holiday of the Protection of the Holy Mother of God, celebrated annually in Russia on October 14, deserves a day of rest in the Russian Federation. This was stated by the chairman of the All-Russian People's Movement "Orthodox Rus'" Mikhail Ivanov.

News.ru wrote that the Church has always been the spiritual stronghold of the country, a source of inspiration and strength, especially in difficult times.

Let us recall that the Protection of the Holy Mother of God is one of the greatest holidays of the Russian Orthodox Church. In 2024, it will be celebrated on October 14.

The holiday is based on a legend about a miracle that happened in the Blachernae Church in Constantinople. According to legend, during an enemy raid in 910, the residents gathered in the church and prayed to the Virgin Mary together. Saint Andrew the Fool was with the worshipers. That day, the Virgin Mary appeared to him and spread an omophorion (a curtain, a veil) over the church to protect the gathered Christians. The enemies later retreated from the city.
