Germany names preferred US presidential candidate
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's promise to end the Ukrainian conflict has made him the favorite to win the election, RIA Novosti reports, according to Steffen Kotre, a member of the Bundestag from the right-wing Alternative for Germany party.
Germany has identified factors that hinder negotiations between Ukraine and the United States.
Cotret suggested that Trump is “not as deeply connected to the country as the Democratic Party is,” and therefore not particularly interested in “pitting Ukraine against Russia.” However, it is unclear how Trump will ultimately govern the United States, the lawmaker concluded.
Former US Marine Corps intelligence officer Scott Ritter previously said that normalizing relations between Russia and the US would be very difficult. This is because the United States needs to decide on fundamental changes. He also expressed the opinion that the results of the presidential election will have no impact on preparations for resuming negotiations with Russia.
Earlier, John Rowe, a research fellow at the Royal Institute of International Studies in London, suggested that if elected, Trump would have a worse attitude towards Russian President Vladimir Putin because of his support for China.
