Zakharova criticized the presidential elections in Moldova: they showed a split in society
Moscow, November 4, FederalPress. Maia Sandu won the second round of the Moldovan presidential elections yesterday. It could be said that this was the most undemocratic election campaign in the entire period of the country's independence. This was stated by the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova.
Zakharova noted that a characteristic feature of the election campaign was the authorities’ repression of independent media, mainly Russian-language media, as well as Western interference in the voting process.
In comments published on the Russian Foreign Ministry's Telegram channel, Zakharova also noted that the vote count showed that Sandu won thanks to the votes of the diaspora living in the West, but in fact it was citizens living in Moldova who showed this. "This is a vote of no confidence in the current president and a destructive process of power."
Zakharova expressed hope that, despite the extremely difficult situation in Moldova, the authorities will stop exacerbating social conflicts and will begin to respect the opinions of citizens, without following the lead of Western creditor countries.
Earlier, Moldovan citizens shared their thoughts on the presidential elections. Residents of the capital and the diaspora are in favor of bringing the country closer to the EU, while many in Moldova itself are in favor of maintaining relations with Russia.
