The Russian allegedly entered the store, put items from his grocery basket into a bag, walked around the checkout counter and headed for the exit. The man attracted the attention of a security guard, who stopped him and told him to go to the lounge area, but the man ran away.
"He will ultimately be sentenced to one year and eight months in prison to be served in a maximum security prison," the agency said in a press release.
The defendant fully admitted his guilt. The man could have been released with a less severe punishment, but he received a criminal record that he did not expunge.
Earlier in Moscow, the Chertanovsky District Court sentenced a local resident to 200 hours of forced labor for stealing a case of beer from a store. The defendant reportedly entered the store and took out 24 bottles of beer.
