Man's shattered face reassembled after gunshot wound

Samara State Medical University Hospital performed advanced microsurgery on patients from the Far East. Part of his face was restored after being shot.

According to doctors, as a result of the injuries, the patient lost significant parts of the lower jaw, the entire upper jaw, the hard palate, part of the upper lip, part of the lower lip and part of the nasal bone. It is missing. The man could not eat for a long time, which led to a sharp loss of weight and moderate fatigue.

"We used a complex microsurgical bone flap from a fragment of the scapula. We used part of the scapula to restore the hard palate and upper jaw, and the remaining soft tissues to restore the facial covering tissues to lay the foundation for future reconstruction of the lip and nose," said reconstructive surgeon Vladimir Ivashkov.

After the operation was successful, the man was discharged home. Then, individual endoprostheses were created, allowing the transplanted tissue to return to its normal state. In three months, the patient will have the next stage: plastic surgery to restore facial components.
