Russia records surge in pneumonia cases

The incidence of pneumonia has increased in at least 16 regions of Russia, Izvestia reports.

There are more pneumonia patients in the Leningrad, Pskov, Vologda, Kostroma, Omsk and Tomsk regions, as well as in Kamchatka, Altai Krai, Udmurtia and Komi regions.

Among those infected are both adults and children. In most cases, patients are diagnosed with infectious pneumonia.

According to the publication, in areas where there has been a surge in cases, kindergartens and schools have introduced "morning filters" to identify signs of illness in students and staff, as well as residents with whom they have been in contact. Sick residents.

"Various viruses can cause pneumonia, including coronaviruses, flu viruses, and herpes viruses. Even the common rhinovirus, which causes a severe runny nose and sore throat, can cause pneumonia. Most often, viral pneumonia affects children under five years of age," explained Ekaterina Demyanovskaya, a doctor at the Hemotest Institute.

Earlier, infectious disease specialist Sergei Voznesensky told Russians about the autumn flu and the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which is caused by coronaviruses, rhinoviruses, parainfluenza viruses and adenoviruses. According to him, the pathogens of these diseases cause most respiratory infections in the autumn-winter period.
