Russia Wants to Ban SpeedTest Service

Russia wants to ban the SpeedTest service, which measures internet speed. It belongs to the American company Ookla. The plan was proposed by the International Academy of Communications and supported by the State Duma and the FSB. This is reported by Izvestia.

MAS (based in Moscow) believes that Ookla is closely cooperating with American intelligence agencies, which are said to have created a system for testing telecommunications networks around the world. MAS added that the testing control system allows obtaining information about the communications network: configuration, equipment used, load and bandwidth.

All this increases the risk of targeted cyberattacks, according to IAS scientists. At the same time, the International Academy of Communications believes that it is technically extremely difficult to block SpeedTest, and therefore operators should remove Ookla software from their information systems. Legislators and security officials suggest that users look for Russian analogues.
