Airplane passenger who sat in one seat for two hours died due to blood clot

An airplane passenger suffered a blocked artery after sitting in one seat for two hours.

A passenger on a plane who had been sitting in one seat for two hours suffered a pulmonary artery blockage due to a blood clot. The man did not survive, the Dim Sum Daily portal reported.

It turned out that the incident occurred on October 14 on a flight of an unnamed airline in China. The 40-year-old traveler, who remained motionless throughout the flight, suddenly stood up after landing and began removing things from the overhead compartment. According to preliminary data, this led to a pulmonary embolism.

Li Wei, director of the intensive care unit at Fujian University Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, said the seating arrangement in economy class could pose a risk to passengers. He said sitting still for long periods in such a confined space could impede blood flow and cause blood clots.

A similar situation occurred on a flight from London to Adelaide, Australia, in January last year. A passenger slept through most of the 20-hour flight and was hospitalized with a 4-cm blood clot.
