Yard Etiquette: Dog Owners Were Told How to Help Their Pets Find a Friend on a Walk

There are over 25.5 million dogs in Russia, making it the fourth largest dog population in the world. Walking is an important part of your pet's life, providing not only physical activity but also opportunities for mutual socialization. During walks these days, it is necessary to follow certain rules to prevent conflicts between dogs and their owners. Konstantin Karapetyants, Chairman of the Russian public organization "Cynology-XXI Century" and Director of the specialized training school "Sokolniki Cynological Center", spoke about this in detail in an interview with Life.ru.

The first rule is to respect the personal boundaries of both the dog and the owner. Do not approach other animals without the owner's permission. Even if your dog is friendly, not all pets are ready for communication.

You should also clearly explain your dog's behavior to avoid misunderstandings. Some animals may be afraid of contact or do not get along well with certain breeds. It is a good idea to discuss in advance how you will treat your pet and how you will talk about your four-legged friend.

Additionally, dogs should not be let off the leash in public places. A safe environment is the basis for comfortable movement for you and everyone around you. Wearing a leash or harness is mandatory in public places.

"Conflicts with other dogs and their owners are not uncommon when walking in closed urban areas. If your dog is not yet socialized, avoid places where there are many other animals. Socialization of a four-legged dog begins in puppyhood. Regular training, gradual adaptation to a new dog and encouragement of calm behavior will help your pet find a common language with other people more easily," the expert said.

Finally, always be polite to each other. If someone doesn't want to meet you or asks you not to approach them, that's okay. Following the rules of "Yard Ethics" will ensure a comfortable and enjoyable walk for all participants.

Earlier, the animal rights activist explained why pets can change their behavior. According to her, even the slightest pain in a pet can lead to a sharp change in its habits, as a result of which owners may abandon their animals.
