The methods proposed by British scientists to combat cervical cancer are very aggressive, says Andrey Korzhikov, a top-category oncologist. In his opinion, they are not suitable for all patients with this diagnosis. Earlier, scientists from University College London said they were trying to supplement the standard method of treating cervical cancer. Before chemoradiation therapy, they decided to conduct a six-week course of chemotherapy with carboplatin and paclitaxel. It was reported that this had noticeable effects, including a 40% reduction in the risk of death from tumors and a 35% reduction in the likelihood of recurrence of the disease.
According to published data, 500 women with cervical tumors took part in the study. Of those who tried the new method, 80% were alive five years later. Meanwhile, 72% of those who received traditional treatment were still alive several years later. As oncologist Andrei Korzhikov notes, chemotherapy is used only in the late stages of cancer, when the disease has spread to neighboring organs or throughout the body.
"Carboplatin and paclitaxel are well-known drugs, and in some cases they really do play a big role in the second and third stages of the disease. However, from personal experience and knowledge of the latest developments in the treatment of cervical cancer, I know that no one carries out aggressive chemotherapy in the early stages," the oncologist emphasized.
The doctor also said that medicine is now actively researching other progressive methods of cancer treatment. According to him, immunotherapy and the use of special substances that affect cancer cells not only from the outside, but also from the inside, offer great prospects.
"These are substances and monoclonal antibodies that suppress various mechanisms of tumor processes. This work is being carried out very successfully. Those who had the fourth stage of the disease or distant metastases were completely cured. And there are already many such cases," assured Andrey Korzhikov.
