Ukraine's borders must be clearly defined before the country can join NATO, allied diplomats reported to the Associated Press.
“Before Ukraine can join [NATO], its borders must be clearly demarcated,” the article reads. Only after the borders are demarcated will it become clear under what circumstances paragraph five of the Alliance’s Charter on collective defense can be applied.
Earlier, NATO’s new Secretary General Mark Rutte said Ukraine would join the alliance when the time comes, and that NATO was making every effort to hasten that moment. “It is clear that Ukraine will one day become a NATO member and we are discussing how to bring that moment closer,” he said.
Mark Rutte has previously said he could not fully support Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky's "victory plan". However, he added that it was a "strong signal" that the proposed project had been accepted by the West.
