Tyumen Mayor Proposes Gradually Getting Rid of Old Greenery in the City. Environmentalists Don't Like the Idea

At the elections on June 27, then mayoral candidate Afanasyev, speaking to members of the city council, stated that he was ready to cut down the city’s poplars if they bothered residents.

Today, the elected leaders returned to this topic. Afanasyev's post was devoid of details, so 72.RU correspondents turned to Fakhrutdinov for clarification. He told what plans the mayor's office currently has for improvement.

"The mayor saw one of the options for solving the fluff problem in cutting down poplars and maples and planting new five-meter trees in their place, but he did not specify which trees. [The plan] is that this work will not be carried out immediately, but, as he explained at the meeting, gradually as individual streets are reconstructed, repaired and improved. From the point of view of administrative personnel, it is unlikely that the air quality will deteriorate so quickly, because the city will lose [green areas] gradually, and not all at once." Mayor Fakhrutdinov shared his thoughts. And he added that the work will last half a century.

— I told you that it is technically impossible. [The poplar] grows on lawns that have become narrower as roads have widened. And when planting a new 5-meter tree, it is impossible to comply with the rules and GOST. There are two main points: First, the distance from the road to the tree trunk must be at least 2 meters, and second, the distance from the capital building to the tree must be at least 5 meters. Why should we plant [this way]? Trees are fed only by their root system. That is, it absorbs both nutrients and moisture. How will it develop if there is a road on one side and a foundation for a permanent building on the other? [The trees] will die everywhere. He (Maksim Afanasyev) answered what they would think." Albert Fakhrutdinov said:

According to him, he also offered the manager an alternative to cutting down poplars. This is simply an effective way to combat fluff. It will be useful to regularly water the tree so that the fluff does not stick to the ground. But this requires special equipment.

"There is no watering bowl. By the way, I told him about this, and Maxim Viktorovich replied that they would be there," Fakhrutdinov shared.

Among the suggestions for reducing the amount of fluff in the city are: Do not mow the grass so that fluff remains, and do not trim the crowns of trees near poplars so that fluff remains there.

In September, Tyumen entered the top five climate agenda leaders among cities with a population of 500 thousand to 1 million people. In a published study, Tyumen was called "one of the greenest cities." At the same time, dozens of trees were cut down on the streets over the summer. We have collected all known cases here.

And recently I tried to cut down a tree in the yard on Sverdlova Street with an excavator. This moment was captured on video.
