TASS: General Popov could be charged with stealing metal due to his gambling addiction

Prosecutors believe that the former commander of the 58th Army of the Russian Army, Major General Ivan Popov, was involved in the theft of rolled metal products due to a gambling addiction (pathological addiction to gambling. — Gazeta.Ru). TASS writes about this, citing the words of the prosecutor.

According to investigators, Lieutenant General Oleg Tsokov used Popov's wealth to involve him in a criminal scheme with businessman Sergei Moiseyev for the purpose of personal enrichment. As a result, metal structures worth 114.5 million rubles were stolen.

Prosecutors said: "Knowing Popov's passion for betting on the results of sports matches, he bribed his wife with a car worth about 4 million rubles and planned the crime at the persuasion of Moiseyev."

The criminal case against Chokov was dropped because the soldier died in the summer of 2023.

In May last year, the court arrested Popov for two months. According to the Investigative Committee, the general was involved in the theft of more than 17 thousand tons of rolled metal purchased by the military-civil administration of the Zaporizhia region for humanitarian aid in 2023.

Popov pleaded not guilty and said the judge in his case was biased against him.

Earlier, Popov stated that all commanders of the 58th Army are ready to testify in his favor in the criminal case.
