Believed it was the governor's assistant calling: 94-year-old submarine designer from St. Petersburg lost more than 23.5 million rubles to scammers

Fraudsters will do anything to deceive people. Recently, they have begun to position themselves not only as law enforcement officers, but also as assistants to government officials. This trick will help you gain the victim's trust. A 94-year-old pensioner from St. Petersburg fell for such a trick. Fraudsters convinced the man that an illegal organization was receiving sponsorship on his behalf. To avoid criminal liability for this, the grandfather recommended withdrawing all his savings and handing them over to a courier. The city residents did just that and ended up losing more than 23.5 million rubles. This was reported by the press service of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region.

- A resident of a house on Basseynaya Street, 53 said that from September 13 to 16 he was harassed by phone calls from unknown persons. He gave his savings to strangers after talking to them on the street near his house, the department added.

According to SPB.KP.RU sources, the unknown person introduced himself to the pensioner as an assistant to the governor and law enforcement officers. The conversation was about sponsoring terrorist organizations. The city resident, who worked as a submarine designer before retirement, gave the courier more than 23.1 million rubles, more than 2.7 million US dollars or 895 euros.

A criminal case on charges of fraud has been opened based on these facts. Law enforcement officers are currently searching for the fraudsters.
