Turkey reports destruction after powerful earthquake

Three houses have partially collapsed after a strong earthquake in Turkey, Interior Minister Ali Erlikaya said.

"After the 5.9 magnitude earthquake in Malatya, the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) and relevant agencies continue to examine the situation on the ground in the regions of Malatya, Diyarbakir, Sanliurfa, Elazig, Batman and Tunceli. Partial collapse occurred in a total of three buildings. There was one incident each in Malatya, Sanliurfa and Elazig," Minister X wrote on social media.

Yerikaya reported that there were no casualties or material damage as a result of the earthquake. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the emergency hotline received "374 calls and messages, of which 341 were notifications of the situation and 33 were requests for help."

Turkey's Disaster Management Authority (AFAD) said experts were working at the site of the collapse and assessing the aftermath of the quake. Local authorities said the disaster was not an emergency. Meanwhile, school holidays were announced in Malatya, the epicentre of the events. In addition, AFAD said there were cracks in some buildings, so residents were asked to refrain from entering for the time being.

Earlier it was reported that a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 occurred in Turkey. The epicenter of this natural disaster is located 46 km east of the city of Malatya, where a plate fault formed last year due to the same phenomenon.
