Former vice-governor of Leningrad region sentenced to four years in prison for large bribe
He was sentenced to four years in a maximum security penal colony. Mikhail Moskvin was found guilty of receiving an especially large bribe. The former official himself did not deny his guilt.
The head of the local government's construction division agreed to an investigation. Then he turned his detention center into house arrest. In his closing argument today, Moskvin recounted his eight months in custody and called for a sentence other than jail.
Prosecutors have demanded eight years in a maximum-security prison colony, arguing that Moskvin undermined the government's authority. Citizens who expected their government to do an honest job may now question that.
After a more lenient sentence was handed down, the former local government councilor was sent to trial. The settled Mikhail Moskvin clearly did not rule out such a prospect. He arrived at the sentencing hearing with a large bag.
