Students who take part in the Olympiads do better than students who were admitted based on the results of the Unified State Exam, Gazeta.ru reports, citing data from the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI.

"Students who entered the university after winning the Olympiad not only cope better with their studies, but are also more active in extracurricular activities," Gazeta.ru reports. It is also known that Olympiad participants have higher average Unified State Exam scores in their specialized subjects than ordinary students.

The MEPhI study analyzed data from 13,900 students, including 290,000 Olympiad participants, who studied at the university from 2013 to 2023. The study is especially relevant in light of the scandal surrounding the 2024 admissions campaign. Then, when he entered Sechenov University in Moscow, Olympiad winners were denied state-funded admission, and there were not enough places for applicants in the target regions.
