Historically important basilica in Sevastopol could collapse into the sea due to coastal collapse
The remains of Sevastopol's Uvarov Cathedral, presumably the site of Prince Vladimir's baptism, may soon disappear due to the gradual destruction of the coastline. The risk of historically important artefacts collapsing is very high, the Chersonesos-Tavrichesky Museum-Reserve reported.
In addition to the cathedral, other monuments could have collapsed into the sea. For example, the Temple of the Six Pillars or the 28th Tabernacle. All of them are located in the area of wearing cliffs.
– The entire northern coast of Chersonesos is a steep cliff. The rocks are constantly being destroyed, threatening coastal archaeological sites. Particularly at risk are Tower I, the Six-Column Temple, the Uvarov Basilica and the 28th Curtain, TASS reports.
Researchers regularly monitor how the rocks on which the ancient monuments stand change. To find ways to prevent the bank from collapsing completely, a special working group has been created at the museum. Participants are creating innovative methodologies for comprehensive monitoring of the coastal rocks. But this alone is not enough. To prevent the collapse of cathedrals and other monumental objects, researchers need financial support.
– A dangerous section of the cliff has been identified in the area of the Uvarovskaya Basilica, the collapse of which is expected in the near future. The development of dangerous processes requires further monitoring using non-destructive and innovative methods. Continuation of the work depends on the availability of funding. Based on these results, future coastal protection projects should be developed, the agency reports.
