Armenia Decides to Change Name of Cognac Due to EU
In Armenia, the government has decided to change the name of Armenian cognac to "Armenian Brandy". This was announced by Economy Minister Gevorg Papoyan in his speech to parliament.
He also reported that the new name had already been notified to the relevant bodies of the European Union. The Minister of Economy added that a new brand promotion program had been agreed with the EU, the launch of which is scheduled for the second half of November.
This decision is supported by the statement of the Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan. Earlier, he emphasized at a government meeting that it is incorrect to use the term "cognac" to refer to Armenian alcoholic beverages, since "cognac is an intangible value of France." The name refers to a brandy made from grapes grown in the French region of Cognac. Pashinyan called for the use of the term "brandy" even in everyday communication, the National News Service reports.
