Protest against parliamentary election results in Tbilisi

Opposition leaders, supporters and civil activists are holding a rally in Tbilisi against the parliamentary elections held on October 26, TASS correspondents reported from the scene of the protest.

A stage was set up in the square in front of the National Assembly, where opposition leaders could address the crowd and announce future plans. A police unit is on duty outside the Georgia State Legislative Assembly. The inner perimeter of the parliament is under special control. Several hours before the rally, media representatives saw several cars with special forces entering the courtyard of the legislative assembly. The vehicle is banned from Rustaveli Street, where the parliament is located.

Before the rally, opposition party leaders marched from the Tbilisi train station to the parliament.

On October 26, Georgia held elections to the Congress, the first of which were held using electronic ballot boxes. According to the National Electoral Commission, the ruling party Georgian Dream – Democratic Party of Georgia received 53.93% of the votes, gaining the right to independently form the government. Four opposition parties overcame the 5% barrier. The Coalition for Change received 11% of the votes, the United National Movement Party - 10.16%, Strong Georgia - 8.8%, and Gakharia's Party for Georgia - 7.76%. The remaining votes went to parties that did not overcome the 5% barrier.

All opposition parties in parliament refused to recognize the election results, considering them falsified. In addition, President Salome Zurabishvili did not recognize the election results. According to her, the CEC data was falsified, and the opposition party actually received more votes in total than the Georgian Dream and the majority in parliament.
