Serbian Construction Minister Resigns After Station Collapse

On the morning of November 1, the Novi Sad train station collapsed, killing 14 people. Blić wrote that the old station canopy, which "was not under repair," collapsed. Serbia's construction minister claimed moral responsibility for the disaster and resigned

Serbian Construction and Transport Minister Goran Vesic has resigned, Blic reports, four days after the collapse of the Novi Sad train station, which killed 14 people.

"Serbia has observed a day of mourning for the terrible tragedy that took place in Novi Sad. Until now, I have never expressed my respect for the victims and their families. On that terrible night, I was at the train station and prayed that the rescuers would save another life. That same day, I resigned and informed the President of the Republic of my intentions. "I would like to inform you that tomorrow morning I will resign from the post of Minister of Construction and Transport," Besik said at a press conference.

He also stated that he took moral responsibility for the tragedy and wanted to demonstrate this by personal example. At the same time, the minister emphasized that the Serbian Ministry of Construction "cannot have any influence on the quality, design and any reconstruction work."

On the morning of November 1, the Novi Sad train station collapsed. The deaths of 14 people, including a 6-year-old child, were confirmed. The newspaper "Blik" wrote that the collapsed old station canopy, which "was not under repair." The newspaper noted that the collapsed structure was more than 60 years old.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has already expressed condolences to Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic over the collapse of the station. He noted that "Russians fully share the grief of their Serbian brothers."
