Russian who photographed women in the subway was expelled from Turkey. What was he accused of?
A Russian man was expelled from Turkey for photographing a woman with her eyes closed in a vehicle.
The court ordered the man to be expelled from the country, and he left Turkey on November 2. In September, the Russian citizen was detained on suspicion of invasion of privacy, and diplomats contacted him, his family and Turkish authorities.
In September this year, Russian tourist Valentin was arrested on charges of sexual harassment after taking a photo in the Istanbul metro.
On September 6, a couple from St. Petersburg was traveling by metro to a Turkish airport to return home from vacation. The man’s eye was caught by a sticker on the window that read “Seat for elderly and disabled people.” He was surprised that no one would give up their seat to such people on Istanbul’s public transport.
The Russian decided to take a photo of the situation in the carriage, and by chance the face of a local resident appeared in the photo.
Another passenger noticed what was happening and started shouting at the couple. Other passengers also expressed their displeasure, as a result of which the couple was pushed out of the carriage and detained by the police. The woman in the photo filed a complaint of sexual harassment. The Russian was also accused of violating Article 137 of the Turkish Criminal Code on the protection of personal data.
On October 24, St. Petersburg resident Valentin was given a suspended sentence of one year and eight months. His wife, Daria, said the man would be placed in a migration prison and then deported to Russia.
In September last year, another incident involving a Russian tourist occurred. She arrived from Istanbul with a chocolate bar laced with drugs and was arrested at the St. Petersburg airport. Olga, 38, was detained when she arrived at Pulkovo Airport and passed through the Green Corridor. During the search, chocolate bars with the inscriptions "CBD 500 MG" and "Cannabisinfused" were found on her. The candy was sent for examination, and it was confirmed that it contained drugs. The travelers now face up to seven years in prison.
