Hezbollah Announces 'New Phase of Escalation' in Conflict with Israel
Following the death of Hamas leader Sinwar, Hezbollah has declared a "new escalation" in the conflict with Israel, without specifying what that means. The IDF has been operating in Lebanon since late September following the death of Hezbollah leader Nasrallah.
The Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah is entering a new phase of conflict with Israel, Al Jazeera reports.
"The operations center reports that the standoff has reached a new level," the agency said in a statement.
Hezbollah added that in the coming days it will become known what the new level of escalation will mean.
The statement came after the IDF announced the resignation of Yahya Sinwar, the leader of the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas. The Lebanese group supports Hamas, which Israel has been fighting in the Gaza Strip since October last year. Hezbollah regularly shells northern Israel, forcing residents to flee.
On September 23, Israel launched a military operation called "Arrows of the North" against Hezbollah, saying its goal was to return people in the northern region to their homes. The group's leader, Hassan Nasrallah, and other senior members of the group were killed in the operation. On October 1, the IDF announced the start of a ground operation in Lebanon, which has since been expanded several times.
Hezbollah said in a statement that it was stepping up attacks on Israeli troops entering Israeli territory along the border. According to the group, some 55 IDF soldiers have been killed in fighting and about 500 wounded since the start of the Israeli operation.
More than 2.1 million people have been killed in Israeli attacks since October last year, according to Lebanon's Health Ministry.
