EU summit calls to stop Russia from 'abusing' asylum rights
At a summit in Brussels, EU leaders agreed to tighten controls over asylum seekers and prevent abuse of the mechanism by “Russia, Belarus and other countries,” Politico writes.
In particular, they called on the European Commission to prepare changes to the legislation that would allow the deportation of people who have applied for asylum in an EU country but remained in the EU after their deportation was refused.
It was also decided, following the Brussels summit, to study “new ways of preventing and combating illegal migration.”
