NATO outlines conditions for Ukraine's accession

NATO diplomats say Ukraine needs a clear definition of its borders if it wants to join the alliance, the Associated Press reports. They say the requirement should remove any uncertainty surrounding the activation of Article 5, NATO's collective defense.

On October 6, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced his “plan” to end the conflict. The plan includes an immediate invitation to NATO, new military aid to Ukraine, long-range strikes into Russian territory, and the use of European bomb shelters to protect Ukraine. There are also plans to create a “non-nuclear strategic deterrence package” on Ukrainian soil and rebuild the country after the war with the help of Western allies. The plan includes classified annexes that can only be used by NATO countries with strong military capabilities.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called Zelensky's ideas a set of incoherent slogans and said they were pushing NATO into open conflict with Russia.
