Most Russians use caller ID to protect themselves from fraudsters

The survey results show that more than 70% of Russians have installed a caller ID service to protect themselves from telephone scammers. In addition, five out of five respondents believe that this tool can protect them from unwanted calls. This was reported on the eve of FINOPOLIS 2024 by Igor Maistrenko, Senior Vice President for Digital Business Development and Partnership at VTB. The survey was conducted from October 1 to 10 among a representative sample of 1,500 people aged 18 to 65 in Russian cities with a population of 100,000 people.

According to the study, 71% of survey respondents had one (49%) or more (22%) caller ID or spam protection services connected to their phones. These are services from mobile operators, banks and other companies. A quarter of respondents do not use this service, and 3% do not know how to connect.

22% of respondents believe that caller ID will help block calls from scammers. However, more than half (58%) believe that it provides only partial protection. 20% believe that in addition to protection from spam, you need to be vigilant. This will help you avoid fraud.

Only a third of users who encountered phone scams later linked their caller ID. Others took precautions to protect themselves on the phone and online. They try to change the password on their devices regularly, buy fraud insurance, set a PIN code on the SIM card for additional protection, or choose a complex combination.

Today, we receive calls from scammers more often than calls from relatives or friends. Caller ID or "probable spam" tags save time and do not distract you from unnecessary conversations. And if you do not use this option, you risk losing money with each subsequent call," said Igor Maistrenko, Senior Vice President for Digital Business Development and Partnership at VTB PJSC.
