Russia Wants to Ban American SpeedTest App

Russia plans to ban SpeedTest, an American app for measuring internet speed, Izvestia reports.

According to the publication, Ookla, the company that owns the service, shares information about the telecommunications networks it operates with foreign intelligence agencies. This significantly increases the risk of cyberattacks and other threats to Russian users.

At the same time, similar foreign services may also be unsafe, so experts recommend using Russian-language applications.

Earlier, the Federal Assembly of Russia and the FSB already supported the ban on the use of SpeedTest.

Anastasia Ositis, President of the International Communications Academy, compared the scale of SpeedTest's influence in her field to SWIFT in banking.

“This is the same mechanism for organizing colonial dependence in the ICT sphere as SWIFT is in the banking sphere,” she wrote in her speech in the State Duma.

As a replacement, experts suggest a domestic development by Rostelecom - the TelecomDaily Megabitus service, or QMS.
