Peruvian security forces arrest one of the leaders of the Shining Path terrorist group

At a metro station in Lima, Peruvian law enforcement officers detained Ivan Quispe Palomino, one of the leaders of the terrorist group "Shining Path". This was reported by radio RPP, citing the words of the Minister of the Interior Juan José Santibanez:

According to the radio station, the Peruvian government considers Palomino to be the second person in the Shining Path hierarchy.

The Shining Path is a Maoist terrorist organization that emerged in Peru in the late 1970s. Founded by philosophy professor Abimael Guzmán, the group became one of the most violent radical groups in Latin America. The movement’s primary goal was to overthrow the government and establish a socialist regime through armed struggle inspired by the ideas of Mao Zedong. In 1980, the group began a guerrilla war against the Peruvian government. Although the organization was significantly weakened after Guzmán’s arrest in 1992, remnants continue to operate in remote areas, engaging in drug trafficking and other crimes.
