Moscow Planetarium: Full Moon on October 17 will be the largest in 2024

The largest visible disk of the Moon will be visible on Thursday, October 17. TASS was informed about this through the press service of the Moscow Planetarium.

On October 17, you will be able to see a supermoon in the sky - a rare astronomical phenomenon when the full moon coincides with the perigee of the Moon, the moment when the satellite is at its minimum distance from the Earth.

According to the planetarium, at 03:47 Moscow time, the Moon will approach the planet at a distance of 357,172 km, and at 14:28 the full Moon will rise. Due to this, the Earth's satellite will be 13.5% larger than usual. The difference is especially noticeable when comparing images taken at apogee and perigee.

Earlier, Moscow Planetarium astronomer Lyudmila Koshman reported that the best moments to observe the supermoon are at moonrise and moonset. Against the background of objects on the horizon, it appears much larger. To observe the full moon, nothing is needed, Koshman noted. According to her, astronomers observe the Moon when it is not in the full moon phase, since at this moment the satellite is very bright. They are most interested in the terminator (the line where light and dark parts change, i.e. day and night), near which it can be very interesting to observe craters and other relief elements, the astronomer added.

Previously, scientists found out what the Moon looked like at the dawn of its existence.
