Scholz expressed readiness to discuss resolution of conflict in Ukraine with Putin

Berlin, October 16, 2024, 15:17 — IA Regnum. On October 16, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in his speech in the Bundestag that he is ready to discuss a solution to the Ukrainian conflict with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In his speech, Scholz spoke in favor of holding a peace conference in Ukraine with the participation of Russia.

"When asked whether we will talk with the Russian president about this (resolving the Ukrainian issue), we answer: yes, we will," he said.

At the same time, the German Chancellor pointed to a “clear principle” in the issue of settling the Ukrainian conflict, within the framework of which decisions “should never be made without the consent of the partners standing behind Ukraine.”

As reported by the Regnum agency, the German newspaper Die Zeit wrote on October 1, citing sources in the German government, that Scholz would call Putin for the first time in almost two years in the coming weeks. At the same time, it turned out that the German authorities have not yet officially requested such negotiations from Moscow.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Barbock said on October 10 that Putin was reportedly not ready to discuss a solution to the Ukrainian conflict with Scholz, nor was he prepared to hold a telephone conversation with the German chancellor. She said Kyiv was ready to create a "just" peace, but the Russian leader had reportedly refused contact.

Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said on October 13 that Germany had not made any proposals for talks between Putin and Scholz. The Kremlin spokesman stressed that contacts with the head of state remain open.
