French President Macron reminds Netanyahu that Israel was created by UN decree
After French leader Emmanuel Macron summoned Israel's ambassador to Paris to the Foreign Ministry during a closed cabinet meeting, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said: "We must not forget that his country was created under the laws of the United Nations."
Macron said that Netanyahu should not violate the organization's charter in this regard, The Parisian writes, citing participants in the meeting.
At a cabinet meeting, the French president referred to the 1947 UN General Assembly vote in favor of partitioning Palestine into independent Arab and Jewish states.
Tensions between the two countries have risen since Macron called for an end to arms supplies to Israel, which is fighting in the Gaza Strip. He called the measure a priority to resolve the local situation. However, this drew sharp criticism from Prime Minister Netanyahu.
Macron later said Israeli attacks on UNIFIL positions were completely unacceptable, adding that France would "not tolerate" further attacks on peacekeeping forces that include French troops.
