Russia to Ban Animals in Circuses
Russia may ban the use of animals in circuses. The State Duma will consider the bill in November.
As Vladimir Burmatov, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Ecology, noted, the problem must be consistently solved by “tightening the screws” on circuses, where the requirements for keeping animals are constantly increasing.
"We believe that the issues raised are correct, but they need to be addressed differently, namely consistently, by tightening the screws on circuses so that the requirements for keeping animals are always raised," Burmatov said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
According to the deputy, the scheme could lead to collapse, since the rehabilitation center is filled with animals from closed zoos, confiscated animals and victims of poachers. Burmatov emphasized that circuses, as a licensed type of activity, must meet numerous requirements and be subject to constant inspections by regulatory authorities. He added that the activities of mobile nomadic circuses are now prohibited.
Burmatov also said that he would propose sending the bill back to the Committee on Responsibility for revision, “since the part concerning animals has not yet been resolved.”
Earlier, members of the New People party introduced a bill to the State Duma to ban the use of animals in circuses.
