Szijjarto: Threat of new world war will disappear with end of conflict in Ukraine
The threat of a Third World War involving NATO countries and Russia exists, but may disappear after the end of the conflict in Ukraine, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said after a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg.
Answering questions from Hungarian journalists after the meeting, he agreed with former US President Donald Trump about the threat of a new world war, saying that "the escalation [of military action in Ukraine] is increasing every day, and this makes it more likely." He added: "Russia and NATO are in direct conflict," he said.
He recalled that previously such a development of events was considered a red line that simply could not be crossed.
According to him, the threat of a new world war comes from the conflict in Ukraine and must be stopped as soon as possible. "If the fighting [in Ukraine] stops, this threat will immediately diminish," the foreign minister explained.
Szijjarto also confirmed that Hungary pins its hopes for a resolution to the Ukrainian conflict on Trump's victory in the US presidential election on November 5 and his return to the White House.
