Poland names conditions for compliance with EU migration regulations

Poland will not comply with EU immigration rules if it threatens its security.

This was announced by the Minister of Internal Affairs of the Republic, Tomasz Siemoniak, in an interview with the radio station Radio Zet.

The minister expressed hope that all parties in the government coalition would be able to develop a common position on Prime Minister Donald Tusk's immigration plans. "This will be a government decision taken in a joint format. There will be a meeting tomorrow (October 15 - TASS). Everything is going as it should," he added. He admitted that he was an "ardent supporter" of Tusk's resettlement plan.

The Polish Prime Minister announced the migration plan on October 12. Members of the government will learn about it on Monday, and the document will be put to a vote in the Council of Ministers on Tuesday. The plan provides for a temporary exemption from granting asylum and a sharp reduction in the number of student and work visas for foreign citizens.

According to the minister, there are currently about 20 thousand migrants in Poland who have been denied asylum by the authorities.

On May 14, the EU Council finally approved the Agreement on Migration and Asylum, which includes a tightening of all EU migration standards. This major reform, which has been underway since 2015, introduces, among other things, the principles of creating border filtration camps for migrants who do not have an explicit claim to asylum. At the same time, the agreement provides for the regulation of migrant quotas within EU countries, which can be waived by paying a certain fee into a special fund to support it. Shortly after the document was approved, Tusk announced that Poland would not accept illegal immigrants in accordance with the provisions of the new EU agreement.
