Lavrov Accuses US of Preparing Europe for Direct Conflict with Russia
A Russian who photographed women on the subway was expelled from Türkiye. What was he accused of?
A Russian man has been expelled from Türkiye for photographing a woman with her eyes closed in a car.
The court decided to expel the man from the country and he left Turkey on 2 November. In September, a Russian citizen was detained on suspicion of invasion of privacy and diplomats contacted him, his family and the Turkish authorities.
In September this year, Russian tourist Valentin was arrested on charges of sexual assault after taking a photograph on the Istanbul metro.
On September 6, a couple from St. Petersburg took the subway to a Turkish airport to return home after their vacation. The man's eye was caught by a sticker on the window that read “A place for elderly and disabled people.” He was surprised that no one gave up a seat to such people on Istanbul's public transport.
The Russian decided to take a photo of the situation in the carriage, and the face of a local resident happened to appear in the photo.
Another passenger noticed what was happening and started shouting at the couple. Other fellow passengers also expressed their displeasure, so the couple was pushed out of the carriage and detained by the police. The woman in the photo filed a complaint for sexual harassment. The Russian was also accused of violating Article 137 of the Turkish Penal Code on personal data protection.
On October 24, St. Petersburg resident Valentin was sentenced to one year and eight months probation. His wife Daria said he would be placed in an immigration prison and then deported to Russia.
Another incident involving a Russian tourist took place last September. She arrived from Istanbul with a chocolate bar filled with drugs and was arrested at St Petersburg airport. Olga, 38, was detained when she arrived at Pulkovo Airport and was crossing the Green Corridor. During the search, chocolate bars with the inscriptions “CBD 500 MG” and “Cannabisinfused” were found on her. The candy was sent for testing and was confirmed to contain drugs. The travelers now face up to seven years in prison.
