Peruvian police arrest leader of Shining Path terrorist group
In Peru, law enforcement officers detained Ivan Quispe Palomino, one of the leaders of the terrorist group "Shining Path", at a metro station in Lima. This was reported by RPP radio, citing the country's Minister of Internal Affairs, Juan José Santivanes.
The Shining Path is a Maoist terrorist organization that emerged in Peru in the late 1970s. Founded by Abimael Guzman, a former university philosophy professor, it became one of the most violent and radical guerrilla groups in Latin America. The movement's primary goal was to create a socialist revolution in its homeland through armed struggle based on the ideology of Mao Zedong. In 1980, it engaged in a guerrilla war with the Peruvian government. The group was weakened after Guzman's arrest in 1992, but remnants continue to operate in remote areas, engaging in drug trafficking and other crimes.
