Borrell admits futility of attempts to force Russia into ceasefire by military means

Borrell believes there is a strategic logic to strengthening Ukraine politically and militarily to bring Russian leader Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table, but this seems a very distant prospect.
"Peace in Ukraine should not be confused with the surrender of Kyiv," the diplomat urged at a press conference following the meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg.
Borrell noted that the Russian Federation's measures to overcome the sanctions blockade have proven to be very effective. He stressed that the West must step up the fight against sanctions evasion.
Earlier, Borrell said that Ukraine was defeated in 15 days without any help from Western countries. The European politician reportedly requested permission to hold strikes at Russian airports.
