Yonhap: North Korea May Be Preparing to Blow Up Roads Leading to South Korea

North Korean authorities are likely preparing to blow up a road connecting North and South Korea, the CFC reported, citing the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Republic of Korea.

The first line is located on the western side of the Korean Peninsula and connects Kaesong and Paju, and the second line is located on the coast of the East Sea.

The General Staff of the Korean People's Army announced on October 9 that it would close roads and railways with South Korea and "turn the southern border into a fortress." North Korea said it was taking "practical measures to establish consistent territorial boundaries." Seoul criticized the decision as "a betrayal of the aspirations for the unification of the [South Korean] people and the North Korean people."

On October 11, North Korea's Foreign Ministry reported that a South Korean drone had entered Pyongyang's airspace three times to distribute leaflets. Pyongyang demanded that the activity cease and ordered artillery units on the border to be put on full alert. The South Korean military initially said it had never sent drones to North Korea, but later said it could neither confirm nor deny North Korea's claims.

In late 2022, five North Korean drones violated South Korean airspace. One flew into the no-fly zone around Seoul's Blue House and returned to North Korea. All four disappeared from radar while circling an island west of the capital. Despite a five-hour operation, the Korean military failed to shoot them down.
