Widely used antibiotics have disappeared in several regions of Russia

Medicines containing roxithromycin have disappeared from pharmacies in almost a third of Russian regions. There is also a shortage of drugs containing azithromycin, clarithromycin and erythromycin. This shortage is due to a reduction in supplies for private distribution. Journalists reported this after checking data from local pharmacies after receiving complaints from patients.

"Patients in 25 regions of the country have encountered a shortage of drugs containing roxithromycin in pharmacies. In addition, a shortage of drugs containing erythromycin has been detected in 12 regions, clarithromycin in 6 regions, and azithromycin in 5 regions," Izvestia reported.

The shortage was found to have arisen in 2024 due to a decline in the production of these drugs. For example, from January to August 2024, 788,000 packages of the drug containing erythromycin were put on the market, compared with 922,000 in the same period last year, according to analysts at RNC Pharma.

Earlier, URA.RU reported that cancer patients complain about a shortage of drugs for cancer treatment. For example, in 68 regions there are no drugs containing ribociclib lizarg. In addition, stocks of immunoglobulins for pregnant women have decreased in Russia. Compared to 2023, stocks of anti-Rh immunoglobulin, necessary for Rh-negative pregnant women, have significantly decreased.
