Olga Berggolts School in St. Petersburg Deprived of Temporary Protected Status

Participants of the Living City movement noted that the school was excluded from the register via the website of the National Commission for the Control, Use and Protection of Monuments (KGIOP). In January of this year, they submitted an application to the department for the building's protected status.

"By law, KGIOP is obliged to prepare a conclusion on the historical and cultural value of the building within 90 working days and issue an order to include or refuse to include it in the list of identified monuments," city lawyers noted. out. They recalled that in the same month, the commission included the school in the list of objects bearing traces of a monument.

The fact that the Bergholz school is off the list means the building could be torn down, city advocates say. They plan to appeal to the prosecutor's office and the investigative committee.

KGIOP confirmed to Petersburg Business that the building had been excluded from the register of cultural heritage sites and that this had happened a long time ago. According to the commission, the official response to the statement by the coordinator of the Living Cities movement Antonina Eliseeva was sent on February 21, 2024.

The department recalled that the issue of the historical and cultural value of the building at 54 Obukhovskoy Oborony Ave. was considered at a meeting of the Committee for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage under the Government of St. Petersburg on November 23, 2021.

As Delovoy Peterburg writes, the Olga Berggolts school on Obukhovskoy Oborony Avenue, Building 54, is planned to be demolished for the construction of the Bolshoy Smolensky Bridge. At the council hearings, it was announced that the proposed design solution for the move, taking into account safety aspects, does not represent any other option.

The city authorities also rejected the option of moving the building. This is due to the fact that the test launch of the intersection may be postponed. These works are not provided for in the design documentation, which has already received all the necessary approvals, explained Deputy Governor Nikolai Linchenko.

Nevertheless, KGIOP included the Olga Berggolts school in its list of buildings with traces of architectural monuments. But city lawyers argued that the demolition could have been avoided because the department had no intention of including the building in the list of confirmed cultural heritage sites.
