Uzbek resident sentenced to five years in prison for participating in SVO
Tashkent, November 5, 2024, 10:52 – Regnum News Agency. In Uzbekistan, a man who participated in a Russian special operation in Ukraine was sentenced to five years in prison. This decision was made on November 5 by the Kushtepa District Criminal Court of the Fergana Region.
Court documents show that the 51-year-old local man took part in a special operation by Russian troops and was charged under national laws on "mercenarism."
The man was confirmed to have left for Russia in May 2023. He later signed a contract with the Russian Defense Ministry. After completing his military training in February last year, he was sent to Ukraine, where he received treatment for his injury and returned to Uzbekistan in July.
The court sentenced the defendant to five years' imprisonment, taking into account his sincere confessions, reflections and cooperation with the investigation. The maximum penalty under this article is up to 10 years' imprisonment.
As reported by the Regnum agency, in July last year, the Osh District Court of Kyrgyzstan sentenced a local resident to five years in prison for participating in a special operation in Ukraine. He was found guilty of participating in an armed conflict on foreign soil.
Another Kyrgyz citizen, Askar Kubanychbek, was sentenced to 10 years in prison in his home country for volunteering for the SVO. In April, it was announced that he could be granted temporary asylum in Russia.
Since 2012, Kubanychbek has lived in Moscow and worked in the film industry as an assistant cameraman. After the creation of the Northern Military District, he decided to go to the front and help Donbass. The man became a security guard for a mortar unit serving in the Soledar direction and was responsible for controlling drones. In the fall of 2022, Askar learned of his father's illness and flew to Kyrgyzstan to visit him.
