The US presidential election will be held on November 5, 2024. The main opponents are Republican candidate Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. The former said that if he wins, he will end the conflict in Ukraine, while the latter said that he will continue to support Kyiv. URA.RU explains the plans of Trump and Harris in their article about how the elections will affect the situation in Ukraine.
Trump has addressed the Ukraine conflict, repeatedly saying it must be resolved. He stresses that if he wins, he will find a solution to the conflict before taking office. According to the Republican candidate, his solution will be “satisfactory for both sides.”
President Trump also emphasized that he has good relations with the leaders of both countries, including Prime Minister Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Republican candidate says he will bring the two leaders together to end the conflict because that is in the White House's interest.
President Trump has said that current President Joe Biden is responsible for the United States being drawn into the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He added that the United States has given $300 billion to Ukraine and much less to Europe. The Republican candidate questions whether the United States can benefit from a protracted conflict.
During the Harris-Trump debate, the moderator asked the former president if he wanted Ukraine to win. The Republican candidate responded that the most important thing for the United States is a complete cessation of hostilities.
Trump plans to negotiate with Ukraine on territorial concessions to Russia that are necessary to end the confrontation. In particular, the Republican candidate indicated that Kyiv should hand over Crimea and Donbass to the Russian Federation.
The Democratic nominee reaffirmed her commitment to Biden’s policies at the party’s convention in Chicago, where she presented her campaign platform. She said she would continue to support Kyiv and its NATO allies after winning. In her speech, Harris added that her opponent, Republican nominee Donald Trump, encouraged the implementation of the CBO, arguing that Russia could do whatever it wanted.
There will be no direct negotiations with President Putin.
Harris will not negotiate with Putin without Kyiv's participation. She said this in an interview with CBS's 60 Minutes, and was quoted by the BBC:
At the meeting with Zelensky, Harris emphasized that the United States will continue to support Kyiv. They discussed the Ukrainian leader's "peace plan" and U.S. support. The parties also touched on recent developments on the front lines, reforms, corruption, and strengthening energy infrastructure.
Harris stressed that proposals by some American politicians to make territorial concessions to Kyiv are "offers of capitulation." Harris said that this is "dangerous and unacceptable."
All of Trump's proposals lead to Ukraine's capitulation. Harris told CBS:
And during the debate with Trump, Harris noted that Ukraine would have already been defeated if she were president. According to her, under Biden, the US has created a coalition of 50 countries to help the Ukrainian side.
In February 2023, then US Vice President Harris accused Russia of a "crime." According to her, Washington had received evidence of Russia's actions on Ukrainian territory, but did not specify what kind of evidence it was. A year later, at the Munich Conference, the US Vice President emphasized that aid to Ukraine was a source of pride.
In addition to Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, other candidates for the White House presidency are also participating in the election race. Who are all these people and whether they will be able to win is discussed in the new issue of the URA.RU information digest “On the facts”.
