KKB No. 2 specialists were the first in Russia to describe and publish in a scientific journal a rare case in world practice.
Doctors at the 2nd hospital in Krasnodar Krai saved a patient who had a metal element lodged in his brain. A radiologist discovered a foreign body. They discovered that surgeons can perform complex operations without damaging vital structures and arteries.
According to the hospital's press service, the patient had previously undergone surgery on her cervical spine. Over time, the metal rod moved into the posterior cranial fossa and penetrated the brain. As a result, a hole formed in the occipital bone where it should not be. The metal was compressing the lobes of the brain and causing vision problems.
"What is unusual about this case is that similar situations described in foreign sources often ended in death, but no such cases have been recorded in domestic literature," the press service added. "Our experts Elena Litvinenko, Ilona Burova and Svetlana Kurilchik describe this unique case and N.V. Sklifosovsky in "Emergency Medical Care."
