School closures and bus stops without minibuses: the first November snow caught Stavropol by surprise
They say Monday is a hard day, but in the first week of November, that day was Tuesday. After the weekend dedicated to National Unity Day, the short work week for Stavropol residents began with nine-degree traffic jams and the closure of schools for schoolchildren after the holidays.
Since the end of last week, a strong wind of up to 30 m/s has been blowing in Stavropol. Gusts of wind knocked down two trees and brought down power lines in the city center. In addition, a strong wind broke the glass front door of a house on Kulakov Street, injuring a child with shards.
The wind was a sign of a weather disaster that came with the first snow. As reported by "KP-North Caucasus" from the Stavropol Hydrometeorological Center, cyclones form in the first ten days of November. The weather is unstable now. But every year, like the first time, ordinary weather phenomena truly surprise local residents and municipalities. From the night of November 4 to the morning of November 5, snow fell throughout the region.
In the foothills region, 10 villages were left without electricity due to bad weather. Due to the lack of electricity and heating, two kindergartens in Yessentuki were unable to accept children. Schools in the region are also closed, since canteens cannot operate without electricity and hot water.
"Most power lines run through fields. Unfortunately, strong winds complicate the work of specialists. The wires cannot withstand such a flow and simply peel off," said Nikolai Bondarenko, head of the Predgorny District.
In Zheleznovodsk, the Lermontov health route was closed due to bad weather. Residents and visitors of the resort city are advised not to leave their homes until the weather normalizes.
The snow that fell in the area was a morning "gift" for local drivers. Local state transportation inspectors noted that snow, cold temperatures and strong crosswinds will create difficulties on the roads in many parts of the region.
"It is expected that cleaning and warming up the car will take a few more minutes. Drivers who have not yet had time to change their tires to winter ones are advised not to drive their personal vehicles," the department reported.
The traffic situation in regional capitals is traditionally deplorable. Everyone who went to work was shocked by a 9-point traffic jam. Those who did not want to overload the transport network with trips in personal transport were in for another disappointment. Witnesses reported that some minibuses and buses waited up to 40 minutes.
Trying to get there by taxi risked both the time and the wallets of city residents. The shortage of cars led to a sharp increase in prices, and if there are available cars, the waiting time for drivers can be measured in tens of minutes.
"Road conditions have become more difficult due to strong gusts of wind, which caused several trees to fall. Most of the applications received by the Unified Duty Dispatch Service have already been processed," said Stavropol Mayor Ivan Ulyanchenko.
Municipalities of the regional capital are working to clear roads and sidewalks of snow. 65 units of equipment and more than 100 people participated. With the arrival of bad weather, the question of the possibility of widening Shpakovskaya Street became more acute. The reconstruction was supposed to ease the transport network, but so far it has only widened the congestion zone.
But don't despair. The air temperature in Stavropol Krai next week will be +10-+15 degrees without precipitation.
