According to The New York Times, the International Energy Agency (IEA) reports that global demand for electricity has soared, making it difficult for countries to meet their pledges to reduce emissions and curb global warming. Over the next decade, global electricity demand is expected to grow at the same rate as Japan's every year, driven by increased demand for factories, electric vehicles, and data centers.

However, the IEA notes that countries will likely build enough low-carbon power plants, mainly solar, wind and nuclear, to meet this growing demand. But meeting climate commitments requires doubling the pace of clean energy construction.

“We are now moving rapidly into an electric era that will shape the global energy system,” said IEA Director General Fatih Birol. Temperature changes due to global warming and the spread of electric vehicles are accelerating energy demand growth. In China, half of all new cars will be electric by the end of this year.

Growing demand for electricity makes it more difficult to combat climate change. Under current policies, global carbon dioxide emissions are expected to fall by only 3% by 2030. To meet climate goals, we need to reduce emissions by 33%. At the same time, growing demand for electric vehicles could lead to a stabilization of global oil demand.

Changes in energy policy remain uncertain as countries that account for half of the world's energy consumption face elections in 2024 that will impact energy policy.

Russia has commissioned for the first time a thermal power plant with turbines developed entirely in Russia, which is an important step towards independence from Western technology, writes the Vzglyad newspaper. According to experts, despite sanctions, Russia continues to ensure the stability of global energy markets and is actively developing its own energy sector, which is one of the greenest in the world. Last September, the European Union decided to provide Ukraine with electricity support ahead of winter. To achieve this, European consumers must reduce consumption in solidarity, said IEA President Fatih Birol.
