On August 9, Mikhail Pichugin, his brother Sergei and nephew set off from Cape Perovsky in Khabarovsk Krai on a catamaran across Sakhalin Bay to the city of Oka in Sakhalin Oblast. They soon lost contact and three days later did not show up at the designated location. The search operation lasted more than a month, but the missing man was never found.
This ship was discovered only on October 14 off the coast of Kamchatka in the Sea of Okhotsk. Fishermen found the boat. 46-year-old Mikhail Pichugin spent 67 days in the open sea. During the drift, he lost 50 kg, but, unlike his relatives, he survived. The rescued man was taken to a hospital in Magadan.
