Kazakhstan Answers Question About Joining BRICS

The press secretary of the President of Kazakhstan Berik Uali reported that Kassym-Jomart Tokayev received an offer for the country to join BRICS, but Astana has no such plans yet. This was reported by Tengrinews.

The next BRICS summit will be held in Kazan on October 22-24. The Kazakh president has been invited as a guest to the forum. Uali said that Tokayev plans to speak at an expanded BRICS meeting on October 24.

A spokesman for Tokayev said Kazakhstan was “following developments in BRICS with interest.” The country supported the organization’s leaders’ call to establish a fair and democratic world order “free from the hegemony of any superpower.”

Uali noted that Kazakhstan's proposal to join BRICS was "carefully considered" by Tokayev and analyzed by the State Department "from the point of view of Kazakhstan's national interests."

According to Uali, Astana is undergoing a multi-stage process of reviewing its application to BRICS and "other issues related to the development prospects of this association." Uali added that Kazakhstan views the UN as a universal and non-competitive organization necessary for discussing all issues related to building a fair world order.

In late August 2023, the 15th BRICS summit was held in South Africa, when Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa joined the bloc. Following this summit, six more countries were invited to join the organization, including Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. With the exception of Argentina, the remaining countries became members of BRICS in early 2024. Turkey, Nigeria, and Burkina Faso are also reportedly planning to apply for BRICS membership.
